MONDAY

Activism week starts now! :D

We had our Student Council members come in during their Spring Break to get the decorations ready. They made a lot of cars with car facts on them. These facts were statistics and things you should and/or shouldn't do while driving. They were placed around the hallways of Valley High School.

On Monday, to kick off this event, we had several students, led by Nathan Magtoto, chalk up the school parking lot with "dead" people to represent the amount of teens who die in a day due to car crashes. We also wrote the names to these random 14 students who would have died on the school steps. So as students walked in, they witnessed the beginning of the Activism week.

FRIDAY

Our last day of Activism was spent by holding a special assembly and a barbecue. At this assembly, we had guest speakers, from teachers to student drivers, talking about their near-death experiences in their own motor-vehicular accidents. Also, we had Board of Education Trustees come to show their support and be present in our final event.

Finally, to wrap things up, our Safe Teen Driving Week Barbecue was held after school and we granted free admission to those who wore the three stoplight colors; red, yellow, and green. We spent time with many of the student drivers and spoke to them about what they had learned this whole week. Surprisingly, they came out with knowledge they had never expected to be important, and our message had been delivered. To bring it all to an end, we all got into our cars, buckled-up, and safely drove away. =]

THURSDAY

During lunch today, we had a special guest appearance of Gus the Bus, from the Clark County School District, Department of Transportation. Gus the Bus started off our event for today, by leading kids at lunch to go outside into out safe parking lot where we held the Car Show. But this wasn't any ordinary car show, the cars exhibited here were classified by not their sexiness but by their safety features. The winner was chosen by selecting the car which had the safest features, such as side airbags, seat-belts, and anti-lock braking systems and so on.

WEDNESDAY

On Wednesday, we put on a play, created by Julio Franco and Ronny Shy, so titled "Only 16". The play was about a sixteen year old female who died due to texting in her car while driving. The play's setting was at her funeral, with her family mourning for their unnecessary loss. With the help of the Thespians, we made this event possible.

TUESDAY

We held an informational Pep Rally that got 3,500 students excited to become a safe teen driver.  Here we played games and had Jasmyn Franklin and Thanjira WIlliams, teach the student body about driving statistics around the United States. Statistics said include that 14 teenagers die everyday from car related accidents and so on.

Summary of Safe Teen Driving Week

Safe teen driving is important in a major metropolitan city like Las Vegas, so we decided to promote the cause through a local school! We’re throwing a Keep the Drive Week at Valley High School, which is one of the largest schools in the city.

The school will be decorated head to toe with street signs, roads, and cars! We will have an action packed spirit week with lunchtime activities and dress up days. Throughout the week, we will also be having giveaways- including the Keep the Drive street ribbon, which we will bring to life!
On Monday, there will be an after school bash where we’ll chalk the parking lot and announce facts. Tuesday, there will be a pep-rally where we will hear from our State Assemblyman, Harvey Munford, and our SBO officers, who will inform students on safe driving. We’ll have an exciting obstacle course which will test the students’ new knowledge while pumping up the crowd!

On Wednesday, there will be a ‘safe driving play’ performed by our award winning theater students, and our annual car show will be on Thursday. Friday, we’ll have an assembly where we’ll hear the tragic story from a Las Vegas alumnus about her car crash that resulted in closed campuses for all Vegas schools. After school on Friday, there will be a barbeque for the students who participated in any of the week’s events or dressed up in red, green, and yellow, the Keep the Drive Week spirit colors!
